How Much Does a Greek Summer Road Trip Really Cost? Fuel, Tolls and the True Price of Driving

The bags are packed, the car has been checked and the destination is set. But before joining the August holiday traffic, there is one more calculation worth making: how much will the journey actually cost?

The answer goes beyond filling the fuel tank. Distance, real-world fuel consumption, current fuel prices, motorway tolls and, of course, the return journey can add significantly to the overall holiday budget.

In August 2026, when thousands of drivers are travelling long distances across Greece for their summer holidays, spending a few minutes calculating these costs before departure can prevent an unpleasant surprise later.

How Much Does Fuel Cost in Greece?

According to Greece's official Liquid Fuel Price Observatory, on 9 August 2026 the nationwide average price of 95-octane unleaded petrol was €1.986 per litre.

On the same day, the nationwide average was €2.243 per litre for 100-octane unleaded petrol, €2.002 per litre for automotive diesel and €0.963 per litre for LPG.

These figures are national averages rather than guaranteed prices at individual filling stations. The actual amount a driver pays can vary considerably depending on the location and the individual station.

The official Fuel Price Observatory publishes daily information both nationally and by region.

This becomes particularly relevant during a holiday road trip: the price you find near home may not be the same as the price available at your destination.

A Simple Calculation Shows the Real Fuel Cost

To estimate the fuel cost of a journey, you need three pieces of information: total distance, your vehicle's average fuel consumption and the price per litre.

Consider a petrol-powered family car consuming 7 litres per 100 kilometres, using the official nationwide average price of €1.986 per litre as our reference.

For a 250-kilometre journey, the car would theoretically consume around 17.5 litres of petrol.

That works out at approximately €34.76 each way.

For a 500-kilometre round trip, the fuel cost rises to approximately €69.51.

But if the same car consumes 9 litres per 100 kilometres, fuel for that 500-kilometre trip would cost approximately €89.37.

Just two additional litres per 100 kilometres can therefore add almost €20 to the cost of a journey of this length.

Tolls Are the Second Major Expense

For journeys using Greece's major motorways, toll charges also need to be included.

There is no single nationwide toll rate. The amount depends on the motorway, the toll stations you pass and the category of vehicle you are driving.

Official motorway concessionaires publish their current charges, including MOREAS for the Corinth–Tripoli–Kalamata/Sparta motorway, Olympia Odos, Nea Odos, Kentriki Odos and Aegean Motorway.

This means the correct calculation before setting off is not simply:

distance × fuel consumption.

It is:

outbound fuel + outbound tolls + return fuel + return tolls.

That total is what should be included in the real holiday travel budget.

A Long Road Trip Can Easily Cost More Than €200

The impact becomes even clearer over longer distances.

Consider a theoretical journey covering 1,000 kilometres in total, including the return trip.

At an average consumption of 7 litres per 100 kilometres, the vehicle would require approximately 70 litres of petrol.

At our reference price of €1.986 per litre, fuel alone would cost approximately €139.

The toll charges for the chosen route then have to be added.

It is therefore easy to see how a long road trip can exceed €200 in transport costs alone, before accommodation, meals, parking or other holiday expenses are considered.

Real-World Fuel Consumption Can Be Different

Any calculation made before departure remains an estimate.

A car that achieves a particular average consumption in everyday driving may perform differently when carrying four passengers, a full boot and luggage while the air conditioning is running continuously.

Speed and driving style also make a difference.

Greece's Ministry of Environment and Energy highlights the role of fuel efficiency in reducing transport costs.

For drivers, this has a very practical consequence: smooth and efficient driving is not only about comfort. It can also affect how much the journey ultimately costs.

Do Not Wait for the Fuel Warning Light

There is little benefit in leaving refuelling until the last possible moment during a long summer journey.

Greece's official Fuel Price Observatory allows consumers to check reported fuel prices at filling stations, helping drivers compare prices before deciding where to stop.

A difference of only a few cents per litre may initially seem insignificant. Across a large tank, however, the difference becomes more noticeable.

Checking prices before departure can therefore be more useful than simply choosing whichever filling station happens to be nearby when the tank is almost empty.

Calculate the Journey Using Your Own Car

Average figures are useful for comparison, but they cannot predict every driver's actual cost.

If you know that your car normally consumes 6.2 litres per 100 kilometres, use that figure. If its consumption rises closer to 8 litres when fully loaded on motorway journeys, use 8 instead.

The same principle applies to tolls. Check the actual route you intend to take and the current official charges for that motorway.

It is also sensible to add a small margin to your initial calculation.

Traffic, diversions or additional local journeys at your destination can easily increase the total distance travelled.

Avoiding Tolls Is Not Always Cheaper

Choosing a route without tolls does not automatically mean that the overall journey will cost less.

An alternative route may involve more kilometres, lower average speeds, more acceleration and braking or a considerably longer journey time.

The right comparison therefore involves the entire trip rather than the toll receipt alone.

The objective is not necessarily to avoid every charge. It is to understand how much it will actually cost to reach your destination.

Sometimes paying a motorway toll may still make sense when the alternative adds substantial distance or time.

Calculate the Cost All the Way Home

One of the easiest mistakes when budgeting for a road trip is thinking only about getting to the destination.

The car also has to come home.

Calculate the distance in both directions, toll charges, expected local driving while you are away and a reasonable margin for unexpected journeys.

A summer road trip does not need to become an accounting exercise. But it does benefit from a realistic calculation before departure.

If you already know that transportation is likely to cost €80, €150 or more than €200, that amount is no longer an unpleasant surprise at the end of the holiday.

It simply becomes part of the trip.
