Before You Leave for Vacation: Could Your Old Greek ID Card Stop Your Trip?

If you are packing for your summer holiday, checking your passport, booking confirmations and luggage may already be part of your routine. But there is one document that many travelers overlook: their identity card.

For years, Greece's old blue identity card has been accepted for many purposes. However, from 3 August 2026, it should no longer be considered a valid travel document for international travel within the European framework if it does not meet the new EU security requirements.

Why Is This Happening?

The Greek digital identity available through Gov.gr Wallet is intended for use within Greece.

It is not a replacement for an internationally recognized travel document.

Likewise, the following are not sufficient for international travel:

• a photograph of your ID,
• a photocopy,
• a driving licence,
• or your booking confirmation.

Always carry the original physical travel document required for your destination.

A Simple Checklist Before You Leave

Before heading to the airport or ferry port, take one minute to check:

• Is your identity card the new card-format version?
• Is your passport still valid?
• Does your name exactly match your booking?
• Are all children's travel documents valid?
• Have you checked the entry requirements of your destination country?

These simple checks can save you from unnecessary stress on the day of departure.

What If You Still Have the Old Blue ID?

If you still hold the old Greek identity card and plan to travel abroad, arrange for its replacement as early as possible.

If there is not enough time before your trip, a valid passport may be the safest alternative, depending on your destination.
